Swearing-in of the 34 local government chairmen

Speech by the Governor

As prepared for delivery. The words spoken on the day may differ slightly.

It is with a profound sense of responsibility and immense pride that I stand before you today to witness this historic occasion, the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected chairmen of our 34 Local Government Areas. Let me begin by congratulating each one of you on your victory. Your election is not just an individual triumph but also a testament to the trust and confidence reposed in you by the good people of your respective Local Government Areas.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for grassroots governance in Katsina State. As leaders of our Local Governments, you are now at the forefront of delivering development, promoting peace, and fostering unity within your communities. The expectations are high, and rightly so, because the local government system serves as the closest link between the government and the people. It is here, at this level that policies translate into tangible outcomes that directly impact lives.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. Democracy thrives when power is decentralized, when decision-making authority is brought closer to the people. This principle underpins the importance of local government administration. You have been entrusted with the sacred duty of ensuring that no community is left behind in our collective march towards progress. From rural infrastructure to education, healthcare, agriculture, water and sanitation, and security, your role cannot be overstated.

To the Newly Elected Chairmen, let me remind you that you are stepping into office at a time when Katsina State faces both challenges and opportunities. Our State has always been known for its rich cultural heritage, resilient spirit, and abundant human and natural resources. However, we must acknowledge that there are gaps that need to be bridged from gaps in access to quality education, modern healthcare facilities, potable water, and reliable roads. These are not insurmountable challenges; rather, they are opportunities for you to make a lasting impact.

I urge you all to approach your responsibilities with integrity, transparency, and accountability. Remember that public service is not about personal gain but about serving the greater good. Every kobo allocated to your councils must be judiciously utilized for projects that uplift the living standards of your people. Corruption, inefficiency, and negligence will not be tolerated under my watch. We must work together to restore the dignity of our local government system and ensure it functions optimally for the benefit of all citizens.

As your Governor, I assure you of my unwavering support. My administration remains committed to strengthening collaboration between the State Government and Local Government Councils. In line with this commitment, we will continue to provide necessary guidance, technical assistance, and financial allocations to enable you to execute your mandates effectively. But let me emphasize that partnership works both ways. While the State Government will fulfill its obligations, I expect nothing less than excellence from you in return.

Key Priorities for your tenure should include:

  • Education and Youth Empowerment: Invest in educational facilities and programs that equip our youth with the skills needed to compete globally. Education remains the surest pathway out of poverty.
  • Healthcare Delivery: Ensure that primary healthcare centers are functional and adequately stocked with essential medicines. A healthy population is a productive population.
  • Agricultural Transformation: Support farmers with inputs, extension services, and market access. Agriculture is the mainstay of our economy, and it holds the key to food security and job creation.
  • Security and Peace Building: Collaborate closely with security agencies and traditional institutions to maintain law and order. Safe communities attract investment and foster prosperity.
  • Infrastructure Development: Focus on constructing and rehabilitating roads, bridges, markets, and other critical infrastructure. Good infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth and social cohesion.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Promote environmental conservation and climate resilience initiatives. Our future depends on how well we manage our natural resources today.

I call upon every citizen to support these newly elected leaders. Hold them accountable, demand results, and participate actively in governance processes. Together, we can build a society where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.

Let me conclude by reminding us all of the words of our revered founding fathers, who envisioned a Nigeria where leadership is rooted in service and sacrifice. As custodians of grassroots democracy, you, the newly elected chairmen, have a unique opportunity to leave an indelible mark on the history of Katsina State. Do not squander it. Instead, rise to the occasion and prove yourselves worthy of the mandate bestowed upon you.

May Allah (SWT) guide you in your endeavors, grant you wisdom, and bless our beloved Katsina State with peace, progress, and prosperity.

Thank you, and congratulations once again!

Long Live Katsina State! Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
