First-year remembrance prayers for the late President Muhammadu Buhari

Jawabin Gwamna

Kamar yadda aka shirya gabatar da shi. Kalmomin da aka faɗa a ranar na iya ɗan bambanta.

It is with a profound sense of honour, humility, and gratitude to Almighty Allah that I stand before this distinguished gathering on the solemn occasion of the First-Year Remembrance, Prayers, and Supplications in honour of one of Nigeria's most consequential leaders, our beloved father, elder statesman, and son of Katsina State, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

Today is not merely a day of remembrance; it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the ideals that defined his remarkable life. It is an opportunity for all Nigerians to pause and reflect on the enduring legacy of a man whose life was devoted to the service of our nation.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the Central Organising Committee, under the able leadership of Boss Mustapha, CFR, for bringing together family members, friends, associates, public officials, and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond to honour a leader whose impact transcended political affiliations, ethnic identities, and religious boundaries.

As the Governor of Katsina State, President Buhari's home state, I consider it both a privilege and a deeply emotional responsibility to serve as Chief Host at this historic gathering. The people of Katsina remain immensely proud of the life he lived, the values he represented, and the enduring legacy he left behind.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, President Muhammadu Buhari belonged to that rare generation of leaders whose personal integrity became synonymous with public service. Throughout his military and civilian careers, he remained steadfast in his commitment to discipline, honesty, accountability, patriotism, and national unity.

Whether one agreed with all his policies or not, no one could reasonably question his sincerity of purpose, his simplicity of lifestyle, or his unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project. He firmly believed that leadership was a sacred trust and that public office existed to serve the people rather than personal interests.

His administration pursued critical reforms in infrastructure development, agriculture, social investment, anti-corruption, security, and institutional strengthening. Under his leadership, Nigeria witnessed unprecedented investments in rail transportation, road construction, airport rehabilitation, power infrastructure, and agricultural interventions aimed at achieving greater food security and economic resilience.

Beyond these tangible achievements, President Buhari gave Nigeria something equally valuable—an enduring example of modesty in leadership. Despite occupying the highest office in the land, he remained accessible, disciplined, and remarkably humble. His personal lifestyle consistently reflected the values he preached, earning him admiration both within Nigeria and across the international community.

For us in Katsina State, President Buhari was more than a former Head of State or President of the Federal Republic. He was our illustrious son, our pride, and our moral compass. He never forgot his roots. He remained deeply connected to his people and continued to demonstrate genuine concern for the development and progress of Katsina State.

His passing one year ago created a vacuum that cannot easily be filled. We lost not only a distinguished statesman but also a father figure whose counsel, wisdom, and patriotic guidance were invaluable to our nation.

To members of his immediate family, we once again extend our heartfelt condolences. While the pain of losing such an exceptional father, husband, grandfather, and mentor remains profound, we pray that Almighty Allah continues to grant you strength, comfort, and patience. May you find solace in the knowledge that he lived a life of honour and left behind a legacy that generations yet unborn will continue to celebrate.

Distinguished guests, one year after his passing, the greatest tribute we can pay to President Muhammadu Buhari is not merely through speeches, monuments, or commemorative events. Rather, it is by embracing the principles that guided his life.

If we truly wish to honour his memory, then we must commit ourselves to integrity over expediency, service over self-interest, justice over favoritism, and national unity over division.

As leaders, we must recommit ourselves to transparency and accountability in governance.

As public servants, we must remember that public office is a trust to be exercised with humility and responsibility.

As citizens, we must place the collective interest of Nigeria above sectional or personal considerations.

And as a nation, we must continue building bridges of understanding, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among our diverse peoples.

These were the ideals President Buhari consistently championed.

In Katsina State, we remain committed to preserving and promoting the values that he embodied. Our administration continues to pursue people-centred policies anchored on accountability, prudent management of public resources, agricultural transformation, youth empowerment, educational development, healthcare improvement, security enhancement, and infrastructure renewal. These priorities reflect not only our vision for Katsina State but also the enduring ideals of responsible governance that President Buhari exemplified throughout his public life.

I also wish to commend the organisers for including interfaith prayers and supplications as part of today's programme. Prayer remains one of the greatest gifts we can offer the departed. We therefore gather in unity to ask Almighty Allah (SWT), the Most Merciful and Oft-Forgiving, to forgive any shortcomings of our late leader, widen and illuminate his grave, admit him into Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and grant him eternal peace.

May Allah also continue to bless and protect his family, grant wisdom to the leadership of our country, preserve the unity of our nation, and guide us toward peace, justice, prosperity, and sustainable development.

Before I conclude, let me remind all Nigerians that great leaders may depart from this world, but great ideals never die. President Muhammadu Buhari's physical presence may no longer be with us, but his life continues to inspire millions. His story reminds us that patriotism, discipline, sacrifice, and integrity remain timeless virtues that every generation must embrace.

May history remember him kindly.

May posterity preserve his legacy.

May Nigeria continue to benefit from the foundation he helped to strengthen.

And may Almighty Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, grant our beloved President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, eternal rest among the righteous.

Ameen.

Thank you, and may Almighty Allah bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank you all.
