Today, we are gathered here to witness yet another bold step in our commitment to ensuring clean and potable water for all. The commissioning of these water supply schemes is not just a government initiative; it is a fulfillment of a promise—a promise to safeguard public health, promote economic development, and enhance the quality of life for every citizen of Katsina State.
Since the beginning of this administration, we have prioritized heavy direct investments in the water sector, implementing transformative projects that address both urban and rural water challenges. Through strategic collaborations, we have explored global solutions, including the World Bank-supported SURWASH Project for Results, where over 25 billion Naira worth of water projects are currently at various stages of completion across the state. This significant intervention reinforces our resolve to ensure sustainability, efficiency, and accessibility in water governance.
In furtherance of this mission, we are set to procure an additional 50 billion Naira worth of water projects this year under the SURWASH program, scaling up efforts to provide clean drinking water to underserved communities. This bold investment will bolster our existing infrastructure, ensuring long-term resilience in water supply for both urban centres and rural areas.
Additionally, understanding the hardships faced by communities in Dutsinma, Kankia, Charanchi, Batagarawa, and Katsina Metropolis, our administration has mapped out the second phase of the Zobe Dam extension, which will prioritize these areas, alleviating their suffering and ensuring a steady supply of potable water.
Beyond infrastructure, we have undertaken policy reforms, including the review and modernization of the obsolete Water Board Edict of 1971. This decisive action aligns our water governance framework with global best practices, enabling greater efficiency, accountability, and sustainability in the sector.
Ladies and gentlemen, access to clean water is not just a necessity—it is a fundamental right. Our commitment to water security aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6, which emphasizes universal access to clean water and sanitation. As a government, we are resolute in our determination to achieve this vision, and with your support, we shall continue to chart the path toward a healthier, more prosperous Katsina State.
As we commission these projects today, let us celebrate progress, embrace innovation, and reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that no community in our dear state is left behind in the march toward sustainable development.
Thank you, and may God bless Katsina State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria
